A Tropical Cyclone alert is still in force for the whole of the Fiji Group as Cyclone Tomas delays arrival and is now expected to hit in the next 24 – 36 hours.
And it has been confirmed that the northern and eastern parts of the Fiji group will be the first to feel the effects of the system.
At 3am today, Tomas was located about 425 km North-North East of Udu Point.
According to the weather office, close to its centre, the cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 100 km/hr with gusts to 140km/hr and is moving southwest at 10 km/hr and intensifying.
On this forecast track, the cyclone may bring damaging gale force winds over most parts of Fiji.
Flooding to low lying areas is anticipated due to associated heavy rain, including sea flooding of low lying coastal areas from storm surges.
For mariners, strong wind warning is in force with rough to very rough seas and heavy swells.
The public is advised to take advantage of this time to prepare to secure property and measures for the safety of family members.
