Cyclone Tomas was upgraded to Category 2 status 10am Saturday by the Fiji Weather Office as wind capacity rise to 150kmph.
Director Meteorology Rajendra Prasad said the cyclone was moving southwesterly directly towards Fiji.
It is expected to reach Category 3 tonight where damaging gale force winds will be blowing at 370kmph from the centre of the cyclone.
Prasad said the current projected path is showing Tomas will start affecting Fiji late Sunday instead of later today.
But strong winds and rain would start early Sunday.
“The change in timing is the result of rather slow movement of the cyclone and its tight circulation which is causing strong and higher winds to be concentrated closer to the system centre (than before),” Prasad said.
Based on the information, Prasad said the Northern and Eastern divisions would be directly affected, but things could change.
Prasad said Tropical Cyclone Ului, also a Category 2, was drifting further westwards from Fiji and posed no threat at this stage.
The last time Fiji was hit with successive cyclones was 1985 when Eric, Nigel, Gavin and Hina visited.
