Tropical Cyclone Tomas has not moved any closer to Fiji since this morning says Director of Meteorology Rajendra Prasad.
Prasad told FijiLive that Tomas is “still hovering in the same place it was this morning”, 700 kilometres north east of Udu Point.
Schools in Fiji have been told to close as a precautionary measure.
Prasad said it was too early to say whether the cyclone would head directly for Fiji, although it was earlier predicted that the system was expected to pass over the group.
He said it was difficult to say when a more accurate prediction could be made of the cyclone’s future direction.
Prasad said if the cyclone did move towards Fiji, it should arrive in the group in the next 48 hours with the country feeling the real effects of the cyclone by Sunday.
“There will be rain later tomorrow if it moves towards us and we should feel the real effects of it by Sunday,” he said.
