Fiji’s long-criticised public service is headed for a turnaround in service delivery and public perception says permanent secretary to the Public Service Commission Parmesh Chand.
Chand said work on reforms to the civil service is well on track with a greater emphasis on creating a leaner, more dynamic and efficient public service.
“We have been working very hard on prioritizing the improvement of service delivery through reforms, particularly with the focus on providing more responsive services to ordinary members of the public as well as investors,” said Chand.
He said the reforms involve emphasis on rightsizing; human resource capacity building through training, a comprehensive enforcement of a code of conduct, discipline and standards, putting the right people in the right jobs and improving the management of office accommodation as well as government quarters.
“The recent changes we have made are for example, better focusing our scholarships to meet the manpower needs in public service, renting out government quarters at commercial rates, centralised information dissemination through the government Information Referral Centre, keeping Government offices directly interfacing with public open throughout the lunch hour and a quicker turn around time on handling grievances and disciplinary action.”
