The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says they cannot do much if people are not willing to get proper licenses to run transport services for school students.
LTA spokesperson Eroni Volavola told FijiLive they have been urging the public to come forward and make applications, or renew expired ones.
“It’s been more than a month now and we can only do something for them if they apply for new license or renewal as soon as possible,” he said.
Concerns have been raised in the local dailies about parents and students losing out on the government’s free bus fare initiative due to failure of transport providers having proper permits.
Under the initiative, students whose parents combined incomes fell below $15,000 would receive coupons for traveling to and from school.
However, the coupons are only valid with licensed transport providers.
