A Singapore-style Media Development Authority is expected to be introduced in Fiji under a new media decree to be in place by the end of the month.

While permanent secretary for Information, Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni would not comment on the provisions of the decree, a meeting of government officials was told last week that the decree would introduce the authority, along with stiff penalties to curb irresponsible reporting.

The setting up of a media tribunal, suggested last year by government, was also discussed.

Lt Colonel Leweni told FijiLive consultations would begin with media organisations next week, with the exclusion of Fiji Television Ltd and the Fiji Times.

He said the promulgation is expected to address “issues” in Fiji’s media industry.

“This is all to bring about responsible reporting so that unlike the past, news is not sensationalised,” he said.

“This will be just to make them aware to report on issues as it happens and not sensationalising issues.”

The Public Emergency Regulations introduced last April will be lifted once the media promulgation comes into place Leweni said.

He said the implementation of the PER resulted in improved reporting standards.

“We have received a lot of reports from the public about a lot change in reporting styles with the introduction of the PER.”
