The death of a two year old boy last night in a hit and run accident has prompted Fiji’s police force to step up road safety operations in conjunction with the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
Director Police Traffic Operations Senior Superintendent Mahesh Mishra told FijiLive that police and the LTA will from today be especially vigilant with taxi drivers and other public service vehicle providers.
“Those committing road offences will be taken to task by the police from today,” he said.
A taxi driver was involved in last night’s hit-and-run accident in Nasinu.
A two-year-old boy was killed instantly while two older children were hospitalised.
The taxi driver fled the scene but was caught by police 20 minutes later.
“The driver is in police custody and was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol,” Mishra confirmed.
He said charges will be laid once the investigation is complete.
The eight and 11-year-olds in hospital were standing on the roadside at Yasiyasi Road in Kinoya when the accident happened.
The road death toll now stands at 12.
