The State-owned residence used by Fiji’s previous prime ministers will be given out on lease, the Fiji government has decided in line with its policy to commercialise government quarters.
Public Service Commission permanent secretary Parmesh Chand told FijiLive the residence in Suva’s Domain area is ideally located and sure to attract a good tenant.
“It is better to rent it out at nominal rate and generate some revenue rather than letting it lie idle,” he said.
Chand said it was Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama’s decision to rent out the property at the market rate.
He said the property had been vacant for the past three years.
“We will determine the rental price after submissions are received and the property will be leased for three to five years,” Chand added.
The residence was last occupied by former prime minister Laisenia Qarase until 2006.
Earlier this week, Chand said government had rented out 10 of its quarters in Suva at market rates expecting to rake in $200,000 annually in rental income.
