A former Fiji town clerk has appeared in court to appeal a 12-month prison term dished out to him last week for an abuse of office conviction.
Jaswant Kumar was found guilty unanimously by three assessors and jailed by High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar last week.
The former Nasinu town council executive appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando in the Suva Court of Appeal to appeal his 12 month sentence.
His lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry also filed a notice of motion through affidavit for bail to be granted while awaiting the appeal hearing. Chaudhry said Kumar’s mother is sick and that Kumar wanted to look after her.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption which brought the charges against Kumar has been given seven days to respond to the application for bail.
The case has been adjourned to March 15 when the bail application will be heard.
