One of the eight men convicted of conspiring to kill Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama claims his job was only to “mix the grog” for his boss businessman Ballu Khan.
Defence counsel Mehboob Raza asked the court to consider Eparama Waqatairewa’s plight as his parents were both deceased.
Waqatairewa has been convicted along with eight others in the High Court case that took four weeks to reach a verdict.
“His job was to provide grog full time for Ballu Khan, and in the Fijian tradition, you cannot leave until your boss finishes drinking,” Raza said.
“This is a classic case where you can tamper justice with mercy.”
According to Raza, neither Waqatairewa nor Kaminieli Vosavere contributed to any of the meetings that allegedly took place.
The eight accused men will be sentenced by Justice Paul Madigan at 3.30pm tomorrow.
