A former Fiji town clerk has been handed a 12-month prison term by the High Court in Suva.
Jaswant Kumar was charged with one count of abuse of office in relation to his term at the Nasinu Town Council.
Kumar’s lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry had last week argued for a non-custodial sentence, saying his client would lose his house and his family would be out on the streets if he was sent to jail.
However, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption said Kumar had showed a blatant disregard for proper accounting procedure despite his 19 years experience as an accountant, while handling $2,334 belonging to the town council.
