A Papua New Guinea policewoman died when a fugitive accidentally blew himself up with a hand grenade while trying to escape from police custody.
The National reports Pawa Moni, a fugitive on the run since 2008 was arrested in the Western Highlands Province on Friday night for a string of offences, including bank robberies and murder.
He was attempting to escape from a police vehicle in Mt Hagen when he accidentally detonated a hidden hand grenade, killing himself and a policewoman, Selly Mol.
Police say three other policemen were hurt in the explosion.
The National said the incident was the first of its kind in PNG.
