The tsunami warning for Fiji has been cancelled. The National Tsunami Warning Centre in making the announcement said the threat from the strong undersea earthquake that occurred overnight near the coast of Central Chile is now over.
Impacts of the waves were expected to hit the Fiji group at around 9am but with no significant rise in sea levels after a lapse of two hours, the authorities agreed to make the cancellation.
“Observations from tide gauges at Lautoka, Suva and Nuku’alofa have confirmed minimal effects of the tsunami on sea level,” the authorities said.
“All clear is now given for people to return home or to workplaces and resume business as usual”.
The tsunami began to lose its impact after wave readings in Tonga were recorded at only point-one metre.
Director of the Meteorological Service Rajendra Prasad told FijiLive there was no real threat to Fiji in the first place, but they had to take heed of the warnings given by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii.
