The Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA)’s Father Kevin Barr says people should be given decent wages to ensure a proper livelihood.
Fr Barr, the economic and social justice coordinator was responding to concerns raised by the Consumer Council of Fiji on the quality of meat being sold to the poor people.
He said poor people are trying to get food as simply as possible to provide for their family, regardless of the quality.
“This is a result of low income and the only way to skip this hurdle would be by giving these poor people decent wages above the poverty line,” he said.
And he said, “It’s a pity poverty stricken people have to live under such conditions.”
The Consumer Council last week raised concerns over the low quality of meat being sold to the poor at exorbitant prices.
Council chief executive, Premila Kumar said people described the meat being too fatty, smelly, blackish in colour and extremely hard.
