Fiji’s Ministry of Health has confirmed treating 44 cases of typhoid so far in the Central Eastern Division.
Ministry spokesperson Iliesa Tora said contaminated water is the main cause at this time.
“We have not ruled out contaminated food from rivers and affected creeks in the affected areas either,” Tora said.
Cases recorded so far have been from Suva, Naitasiri, Ra, Ovalau and Koro.
A public alert has been issued advising people to seek medical assistance immediately if any hint of sickness is felt, and to also limit movement during this time.
“People must wash their hands with soap and water, boil all drinking water and keep toilets clean,” Tora said.
Meanwhile, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) say the public water supply is safe as it is treated carefully. .
WAF spokesperson Joe Cava said water from outside the public supply are the ones at risk of being contaminated.
He said people using water not supplied by them should boil it (the water) before drinking as it is raw and untreated.
