Permanent Secretary for the Public Services Commission Parmesh Chand, told FijiLive that stakeholders including the Finance Ministry and Government Supplies department were working on submitting a paper to Cabinet.
“We want to see how we’re going to handle the staffing aspect of Government Supplies.
We’ve got quite a lot of staff, as much as 160 we believe.
“Not all of them are established staff, there are a number of government wage earners and of course temporarily hired staff,” Chand said.
Under the new “Fiji Procurement Office” structure, government departments should have a maximum of 38-40 staff.
“So we have a number of staff to deal with in terms of redundancy or redeployment, that decision is yet to be made.
“Government Supplies will be reorganized into what we need right now. We don’t need trading stores.
“We need a better organized Procurement Office so that the system of procurement for government is improved, quicker, transparent, clear and free of abuse.”
