A fire engulfed the home of an Indian family in Jittu Estate, Suva early this morning and firefighters responded in time before it penetrated the populated squatter settlement.
Divisional Fire Officer Central Eastern, Qio Moceitai told FijiLive they received a call from a resident of Jittu at 7.30am and dispatched two fire trucks from the main Suva depot.
“Nine firemen are at the scene,” Moceitai said.
Qio said they managed to contain the fire but could not save the corrugated iron house.
Officers from the National Fire Authority said they have spoken to the home-owner Ramesh Chand who told them the fire started from the living room.
But they are yet to verify whether it was an electrical fault that started the fire, or human error.
The house had 5 people living in it.
