Fiji seeks the support and understanding of its development partners and international community, the
United Nations Human Rights Council was told.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the European Union Peceli Vocea said this in an attempt to bring about meaningful and constructive institutional reforms.

This was part of his submission during the Council’s 7th Universal Periodi Review (UPR) in Geneva.

The UPR is a process which involves a review of the human rights records of all 192 UN member states.

“Fiji therefore invites the international community to engage with it, to visit and see the situation for themselves and to provide practical support and assist Fiji implement the reform initiatives that are in progress.

“It is the Government of Fiji’s fervent conviction that these reforms will usher in true and sustainable democracy and prosperity leading ultimately to the full realization and enjoyment of fundamental human rights and
freedom by its citizens,” Vocea said.

Fiji is among the 16 countries which are having their human rights records reviewed during the two-week session from February 8-19.

The other countries are Qatar, Nicaragua, Italy, El Salvador, Gambia, Bolivia, San Marino, Kazakhstan, Angola, Iran, Madagascar, Iraq, Slovenia, Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
