A man landed a job in a British hospital after claiming he had previously worked at the hospital that features in the US TV-hospital drama ER, the Sun reports.

Greig Ferguson got a job as a nurse after telling bosses he had worked at the County General Hospital in Chicago, and his story was believed, The Sun reported.

He then walked around the halls of the National Health Service treatment centre proudly displaying a badge marked 'Dr Greig Ferguson MD’.

Although Mr Ferguson had qualified as a nurse at the University of Portsmouth in 2002, the court heard he had drastically embellished his resume to improve his job prospects.

In his application for the position of emergency nurse practitioner at St Mary's Treatment Center in southern England, Mr Ferguson also claimed he had seen military action.

The 35-year-old Scot said he had worked as an operational medic in the Royal Marines seeing action in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and the Gulf - all of which was a lie.

Mr Ferguson's work of fiction landed him the job in September 2007 and he stayed until he was found out in October 2008.

His deceit only came to light when he was treated by a consultant who became suspicious of his claims and decided to inform Mr Ferguson’s employer.

Mr Ferguson confessed his lies and pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud when he appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court.

He was fired from the hospital and ordered to do 150 hours of community service. He is currently working in Scotland as a handyman.

"It was an ego boost for him, and he certainly got a kick from carrying that title around with him,” said Detective Sergeant Richard Wheeler, who investigated the case.

"He obviously watched ER and he may have fallen in love with the idea of being an ER doctor and the status that gave him."
