Villagers of Tonia village in Tailevu were shocked to find the body of a male student floating in a nearby creek yesterday.

Police have confirmed the discovery but have withheld the victim’ name as investigations begin.

Assistant Police Spokesman Sergeant Suliano Tevita said the body is that of a 24-year-old student of the Fiji Institute of Technology.

“He was found was afloat in the Nabaitavo River by Tonia villagers,” Tevita said.

Police believe the victim, a villager from Tonia, was swimming with a friend on Saturday before being swept away by strong currents.

The post mortem is expected to be carried out later today.
