Fiji’s education ministry will be spending around $1.5 million buying textbooks and teaching materials for free distribution to primary schools around the country.
Education minister Filipe Bole said the money was taken out of the ministry’s budget last year to cover 2009 till 2011.
Textbooks have been purchased from the Government Supplies and Government Printer. Other books will be purchased from local bookshops and distributors in New Zealand.
A ministry press release said $288,639.94 would be taken from this year’s allocation for primary schools in the Eastern, Northern and parts of the Western education districts.
Primary schools in the Central and Western divisions will receive a further $267,212.70 this year.
