The Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Bureau wants to develop a tax-free zone in the western part of Fiji to boost economic activity in the area, FTIB CEO Annie Rogers says.
Rogers said the idea is still in the planning stages, and that the new venture would require significant amounts of funding to purchase the land site to house the business zone.
She said the FTIB was hoping to get financial support from international donors like the European Union, who funded the first tax-free zone in Kalabu, Suva in 1997.
Rogers added the initiative was part of its Millennium Development Goals in mounting global partnership for development.
“The establishment of tax-free regions to boost activity in depressed areas is a welcome move as investors are interested in looking at the whole tax-free region.
”But for it to progress, infrastructure is an issue and fortunately Government is targeting major infrastructure improvements.”
