Fiji Public Service Commission permanent secretary Parmesh Chand has announced that 357 civil servants will retire this year as part of the retirement at 55 policy adopted by government last year.
Chand said flexibility will be maintained to re-engage those over 55 on a case by case basis based on requirements and skills needs of respective ministries, departments and agencies.
He said the retirement policy is part of reforms to contain the size of the civil service and provide opportunities for younger graduates to join the civil service thus boosting efficiency.
”With civil service reforms ongoing and at the heart of government’s agenda of Building a Better Fiji for all, the retirement policy along with the re-organisation of government quarters, the modernisation of disciplinary processes and capacity building in the civil service are all aimed at ensuring improved efficiency and productivity of the public sector,” Chand said.
Last year 2,231 employees retired with 292 re-engaged to ensure continuity of service in the respective ministries and departments.
