Fiji’s participation at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China is expected to both attract investors and promote the country as a top tourist destination.
Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau chief executive and Fiji’s Commissioner to the Expo, Annie Rogers said this at the official launch of the events’ publicity campaign in Valelevu today.
The trade event will run for six months from May 1 to October 10.
“There will be 227 countries participating and more than 70 million visitors are expected there. So we’re aiming for people to come and see the products and buy them,” Rogers said.
“There will be two sets of products, ones that are going to be displayed on the booth and ones that will be on retail.”
Products that will be displayed in the Fiji booths will include locally made furniture and liquor like Fiji Bitter, body products, canned foods, spices, kava and shoes.
Participating countries will be permitted to retail five products sourced and manufactured locally.
In Fiji’s case, they will mainly include handicraft products, clothing and water.
Inside the Fiji booth will be a takia (huge traditional Fijian boat) decorated by gowns selected from the Fiji Fashion Week.
Rogers confirmed there will be four attendants manning the Fiji booth who are well versed with Fijian culture, tradition and the Fiji economy.
Items for the Fiji booth will be shipped to Shanghai next month.
