Fiji’s National Fire Authority says it is working with the police and the Fiji Military Forces to investigate this morning’s fire at the army’s engineering corps barracks in Nabua.

Chief fire officer Tupou Saubulinayau said that from initial observations, the fire at the barracks would have started a few hours before the fire brigade arrived.

The top floor of the concrete building housing six flats was destroyed in the blaze.

Saubulinayau said NFA Suva received the fire emergency call at about 6.13 this morning from a bystander.

“The heat generated from the barracks was intense and it was spreading quickly to the attached bottom flat of the double storey building,” he said.

“The firefighters instead focused on preventing the fire from spreading to the attached bottom flat of the building while at the same time extinguishing the fire in the double storey building. The firefighters managed to save the bottom flats.”

There is no word yet on what caused the fire, which took three fire trucks and almost three hours to put out.
