More than 500 Fiji nationals responded to scholarships offered by the Indian government for academic studies at Indian universities for the 2010 academic year commencing July.

But only 25 will be awarded placements for Bachelor of Arts, Masters and PhD degree studies.

Director of the Indian Cultural Centre in Suva Dr K. K. Mishra told FijiLive this has been the largest lot so far since the scholarships began in 1972.

“We will be conducting interviews in Suva, Labasa and Lautoka to cater for those that applied from these different locations”.

Mishra said they were in collaboration with over 300 universities in India that offer a wide range of disciplines from Agricultural Science, Commerce, Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology, Mass Communication, Dance and Music.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship program in Fiji is the oldest running outside of India. Fiji is also the only country that gets the most allocation.

The deadline for applications was last Friday and the successful recipients announced in June.
