The United Nations said Wednesday that the main prison in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince collapsed during the devastating earthquake, allowing some inmates to escape.
"The main prison in the capital collapsed and some inmates fled," said Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Several official buildings, including the presidential palace and parliament, and UN offices were destroyed in the magnitude 7.0 quake on Tuesday, according to Haiti's president Rene Preval.
