The Ministry of Education’s move to provide free and quality education for all Fiji students by 2012 began with the dispatch of free textbooks to all primary schools in the Eastern Division.
Essential textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 have been packaged and are now ready to be delivered starting with schools in Kadavu.
According to the Ministry of Education, the decision to start the distribution with the Eastern Division is due to geographical isolation of these islands and the challenges they face with regards to obtaining educational resource from the main centers.
“Once the distribution in the Eastern Division is completed, schools in the Northern Division will be the next recipients followed by those in the West.
“Schools in the Central Division will be distributed their texts to complete the exercise for primary schools,” press release stated.
Head teachers from Lomaiviti, Kadavu, Lau and Rotuma are adviced to make necessary arrangements for the collection and shipment of these books so that students receive their textbooks on the first day of Term One, 2010.
The exercise is to assist economically disadvantaged families, who are finding difficulties in paying for their children’s education.
