US President Barack Obama on Tuesday got a rise out of one of his political allies, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, surprising him by calling in to a radio show Tuesday and identifying himself as Barry from DC.
Kaine, who leads the state just south of Washington, DC, was taking part in a monthly call-in program on WTOP radio.
Thirteen minutes into the show, the announcer said the next caller would be someone named Barry, from DC.
"Governor Kaine, this is actually the president of the United States calling," Obama said.
"No. Oh, my gosh," Kaine said with a laugh.
"I want to complain about traffic in Northern Virginia," said Obama.
"Rather than go there, I just wanted to say how proud we are of your service," Kaine said.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs explained that it was outgoing "Governor Kaine's last radio show, and I know there was a call sheet that went in... If he identified himself as Barry from DC, it's to surprise the governor of Virginia, yes."
