Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood was cautioned Tuesday after attacking his Russian ex-girlfriend, police said.

Wood, 62, had a stormy relationship with Ekaterina Ivanova, 21, after taking up with her last year, prompting a divorce from his wife of nearly 25 years, but the pair are thought to have split last month.

Police would not directly name Wood in line with policy but when asked about the case, said: "A 62-year-old man from Esher has been cautioned for common assault in connection with a domestic incident in Claygate high street on Wednesday, December 2."

The attack took place near Esher in Surrey, southwest of London, where Wood has a 19th century neo-gothic tower.

Ivanova lifted the lid on their rocky relationship, labelling Wood an "evil goblin king" in an interview with celebrity magazine Hello! last week.

"The whole thing started off like a fairytale. But then it felt like an evil fairytale," she said. "He went all Jekyll and Hyde. I'd be trapped there with an evil goblin king."

In July last year Wood -- who joined the Rolling Stones in 1976, and plays alongside Mick Jagger, fellow guitarist Keith Richards and drummer Charlie Watts -- checked into rehab to be treated for long-term alcohol addiction.

And earlier this year, police were called to Wood's house after a row in which it was claimed Ivanova threatened to kill herself.

Wood and his former model wife Jo, 54, split last year after the former Faces star began a relationship with Ivanova.
