Fiji’s Disaster Management Committee (DISMAC) has indicated in an initial assessment that the Rewa Delta and Navua were the areas hardest hit by Cyclone Mick.

DISMAC acting Director Pajiliai Dobui said arrangements are being made for teams to survey outlying islands to determine the cost of damage caused by the cyclone.

“We’ve sent out 17 teams to collect information before we distribute aid. People should be expecting cooking utensils, blankets and food items basically tinned stuff distributed as cyclone relief assistance.”

“We still have to survey the outer islands to determine how bad they have been affected by the cyclone but so far Navua and Rewa Delta have been the worst hit,” Dobui told FijiLive.

“We have more than 3000 evacuees, 2000 of whom are from the Western division. They have been advised to remain in the evacuation centres until their areas are cleared up,” he said.

According to Dobui, DISMAC is working with the Red Cross to distribute relief assistance.

He said 54 homes around Viti Levu were completely destroyed by the cyclone.

The Water and Sewerage Department has confirmed that most residents in the greater Suva/Nausori corridor received normal water supply this morning.

Eighty per cent of the Sigatoka area has had water supply restored as well as in Ba, 90 per cent in Tavua, while supply to Rakiraki and all the areas in the north including Labasa, Savusavu and Taveuni had been normalised.
