The Lautoka Magistrate Court will on Monday sentence a former employee who pocketed money paid to the court as traffic fine.
Sakiusa Qoro, a court clerk, pleaded guilty to one count of Embezzlement by Public Servant this week.
On March 26 this year, Qoro had issued an unofficial receipt to a traffic offender and took the fine for his own use.
According to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, the issue came to light when the offender was repeatedly told by the Land and Transport Authority (LTA) that the fine was outstanding when he tried to renew his driver’s license.
The man then complained to LTA that his mother had paid the traffic fine and identified the individual to whom she paid the fine to at the court registry.
FICAC prosecutor Laisa Lagilevu has told the court that the Penal Code prescribes a penalty of imprisonment of up to 14 years for the offence.
