Besides the campaign to eradicate crime in Suva city, the Suva City Council will be installing security cameras in various locations in a bid to reduce criminal activities.
The Crime Free campaign which will be launched in a fortnight’s time will be assisted by businesses, communities and security forces in the greater Suva area.
Close to a million dollars will also be invested in crime prevention technologies and Crime Free Chairperson Ilitomasi Verenakadavu says they will be going down to communities to advocate against crime.
“Four different communities have been formed to work on various parts of Suva including the central business district and residential areas near the city border,” Verenakadavu said.
“This initiative will be a community approach with plans to provide alternative livelihood for offenders. We’ve also invested a large sum of money for prevention technologies like installation of cameras in various parts of the central business district.”
Security officers will be working in the greater Suva area at any given time after proposal to use these resources to supplement the work of the Police officers.
Verenakadavu remains optimistic that despite the odds reducing the crime rate in Suva will be an achievable target.
The Crime Free Day will be launched on December 14.
