A meeting organised by the Ministry of Transport has been told to promote cycling to address problems of pollution, fuel, traffic congestion and poor health.
“The more people cycle, the more this reduces greenhouse gases, lessen reliance on fossil fuels and cuts back on pollution,” said cycling enthusiast Dom Sansom, the President of Cycling Fiji.
Sansom spoke on the subject, “Alternative Transport”, at the eighth Fiji National Transport Consultative Forum 2009, held at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami today.
He said that it was rare to see an adult on a bicycle in Fiji as bikes are largely seen as toys.
“What if we had a method of transport that you could buy for a couple of hundred of dollars and cost nothing to run, uses no fuel, no petrol or diesel, produces no emission and does not damage the road,” Sansom said.
“Bicycle is a vehicle you can maintain yourself and parts don’t cost a fortune… keeps us fit and healthy while you use it and protects against heart diseases, diabetes and obesity. I hardly find an adult on a bike and I can say that the cycling culture has been long lost.”
