The 2010 Budget is meant to secure Fiji’s economic stability over the next five years, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Speaking at the joint meeting of Fiji-Australia and Australia-Fiji business councils in Natadola, Sayed-Khaiyum said measures in the Budget were meant to ensure that Fiji achieved long term prosperity.
“We have not given handouts but positioned ourselves for the next five years. For example we have removed price control which is a very archaic way of doing things. Assistance should be targeted specifically at the poor instead of distorting the market with things like price control. We have also provided subsidy not just for buses but also for other modes of transport,” said Sayed-Khaiyum.
He said the many other initiatives being put in place will ensure longer term economic stability and were based on government’s overarching initiative under the People’s Charter program.
