Members of the Tongan community at the South Pacific Pageant in Suva, Fiji came together in an unusual show of support for their pageant queen by lying on the ground to form a walkway for her to the stage.
The spontaneous gesture came at the end of the float procession, which began at Suva’s Flea Market and ended in Albert Park, providing a highlight at the end of the procession this afternoon.
Miss Tonga Paea Williams was ready to disembark the float in Albert Park and a fork lift was present to move her down from her float on to the ground but Williams’ supporters however refused to their queen’s feet touch the ground.
The women supporters in turn lay flat on the ground to form a walkway for Williams right up to the main stage.
The best float award eventually went to Tuvalu, with Kiribati coming in at second place and Tonga and Fiji in a third place tie.
