A court battle now looms between Fiji’s only phone landline provider Telecom Fiji Ltd and mobile phone operator Digicel Fiji Ltd over unpaid debts claimed by the Irish-owned company.
Following a winding up petition filed in the High Court last month by Digicel Fiji, a counter action by TFL is looking likely, with the local company today issuing a strong statement on the matter.
“Telecom Fiji Limited denies that it is indebted to Digicel (Fiji) Limited in the sum claimed. Telecom Fiji Limited believes that a winding up petition is not the proper way to proceed in this matter and as such the winding up petition is an abuse of the court process and is designed to damage (our) reputation,” said acting chief executive officer Sakeasi Seru.
“Telecom Fiji Limited is a solvent company and is able to pay its debts. Telecom Fiji Limited will take appropriate legal and commercial action against Digicel (Fiji) Limited to defend its reputation and assures the public of Fiji that the company will continue to provide services as usual.”
The sum claimed by Digicel has not been made public and its winding up petition is expected to come before the High Court next week.
