A Fiji school teacher is likely to be charged this week in connection with the alleged defilement of a 13 year old girl in the northern town of Labasa.
Police Commander Northern, Assistant Superintendent Luke Qionibaravi, said his team expected to lay charges of defilement against the 47-year-old man later this week.
Qionibaravi said the man was arrested on Friday after the girl told her teacher this week about being sexually molested by the man in offences stretching back to 2007, when the girl was 10.
He said the girl first told her classmates about the matter, who then told their teacher.
Qionibaravi said it seemed the teacher had been able to take advantage of the girl because her parents were separated and she lived with her father, who was a farmer.
The man will remain in custody until charges are brought against him this week.
Qionibaravi urged parents, elders and guardians to be “very vigilant” in looking after their young ones because of the increase in such cases in recent weeks.
