Fiji’s police force and administrators of the capital Suva have launched an initiative to declare the city crime free by the end of next month.
In a presentation to members of the media, Inspector Anare Masitabua said the force and the council shared a vision for a safe, free and friendly Suva.
“Our role is to protect the city of Suva, its citizens and visitors to be safe and secure in a crime free environment creating a sense of pride,” he said.
Masitabua said the crime rate in Suva had dropped to 1360 as of last month compared to 2285 for the same period in 2008.
“We have divided the city into four zones and each zone has its own committee that involves everyone in the community with the support of the police,” he said.
Masitabua said there would be a review of all the crime prevention committees and that the committees had undertaken an aggressive approach towards addressing crime which included stop and search of suspects, apprehending warantees and continuous raids on drug dealers, bootleggers and pawn shops.
The crime free Suva city initiative will be launched next month by Minister for Local Government, Colonel Samuela Samatua.
