A Fiji Government representative has told US officials here how the Fiji military had given its support in the fight against terrorism in Iraq when others turned their backs.

“As regards the fight on terrorism in Iraq, we were the first to lend support when many had declined,” said Ministry of Regional Development permanent secretary Manasa Vaniqi.
 
“Our participation is further demonstrated in a number of American security companies serving in Iraq.”

Vaniqi was speaking at the opening of the 4-day Disaster Management workshop in Lami this week, conducted by the US Military Centre for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, and the Asia/Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii.

Vaniqi spoke of the close friendship demonstrated in the battlefields of Bougainville in the Solomon’s during World War II between Fijian and American servicemen.

“…our forefathers, our fathers and uncles fought the war together in a common bond and common ground to bring about peace to this part of the world,” he said.

He said Fiji soldiers also supported the Camp David Accord with its presence in Sinai for over a quarter of a century.

The US Government-sponsored exercise is meant to assist Fiji better prepare for natural hazards like hurricane, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis. 

Leading the workshop is Lt. Gen (Retired) John Goodman, Director of the Centre of Excellence. His last military assignment was as the Commanding General of United States Marine Forces Pacific.

Attendees at the workshop include the US ambassador to Fiji, Steven McGann, senior officials from the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Military, Fiji Navy, National Disaster Management Office, Divisional Commissioners, Provincial Administrators, District Officers, Municipal Special Administrators and Local Government officials.

Vaniqi said the Americans are expected to continue with the Disaster Management Exercise “for the next six years”.

Also, he said the US has assured support, particularly in the provision of improved communication facilities.
