The Suva City Council has put into action the 2009 Miss South Pacific Pageant (MSPP) theme “Preserving our environment the Pacific way” by kicking off a clean up campaign before the launch of the week long regional event next week.
The campaign will also include the beautification of Suva and will be aimed at making people more aware of the environment and keeping the host city clean.
“The council has launched the clean up campaign to have Suva clean, green and beautiful by the time the Pacific guests and Queen arrive,” MSPP events secretary Aqela Cakobau said.
Besides the clean up campaign, organisers will also unveil a plaque to mark the hosting of the pageant in Fiji and the reconstruction of the newly renovated Kingsford-Smith Pavillion at Albert Park, the venue of the pageant.
“This is the first time we’re hosting the event here in Fiji and this is also the first time for the event to be held over a week. We have designed a plaque to mark the first ever project and the assistance shown towards the facelift of Suva,” said Cakobau.
She said the names of organising committee members would be on the plague.
Meanwhile, the accompanying Wasawasa Arts Festival will begin at Albert Park tomorrow while the pageant official opening is set for Saturday with contestant introductions and flag raising ceremonies for participating countries.
