A Fiji pilot on charges of making a hoax airport bomb threat to stop his then girlfriend from leaving the country has today appeared in court for the murder of another woman, a Suva kindergarten teacher found dead in her home early this month.
Dressed in a black suit, Imshad Izrar Ali appeared impassive as he sat in the dock in Suva Magistrates Court 4 while his lawyer, Mohammed Anwar Khan, appealed for his bail.
The prosecution objected to the bail application, highlighting that Ali had allegedly re-offended while on bail for a previous charge.
“He is currently on bail for a Nadi offence where he is facing a charge of uttering threats and false statements,” said Director of Public Prosecutions lawyer, Jasveel Singh.
Apparently, Ali made a hoax bomb threat to the Nadi International Airport in 2007 to stop his then girlfriend from flying out of the country, Singh said.
He added that Ali was now charged with a serious offence and should remain in custody.
But, after viewing the bail form that outlined conditions imposed on Ali in his previous charge, Magistrate Eparama Rokoika agreed with the defence.
As part of his bail conditions, Ali is to remain with his surety until his next court appearance on November 27, report to the nearest police station two days a week, and not interfere with witnesses in the case.
Ali was arrested on Saturday and charged.
Police allege that he had strangled his 35-year-old partner and left her to die at her Howell Road home.
