The bus fire accident in Sigatoka last year has triggered the Fiji Consumer Council’s attention to launch an “Insurance in Fiji- Who pays, Who profits and who losses?” campaign in a bid to make the Third Party policies beneficial to all parties.
The launching of this campaign came to light after the insurance cover for the 60 passengers on the bus was for $40,000.
“… a measly sum for the 12 fallen victims,” said the Council chief executive officer, Premila Kumar.
The Council believes that the Compulsory Third Party Policy Insurance (CPTI) is one key issue that deserves attention of the policy maker and the consumer.
The Council stated that the provision for third party insurance is compulsory for all motor vehicle and there are numerous exclusion provisions that do not protect third parties who are injured by motor vehicles.
They are compelled to act on disseminating vital information to vulnerable consumers who may have been injured or the family of those who may have died in motor vehicle accidents and are unable to make their financial claims from Insurance companies under the Third Party policy, she said.
Kumar said the council intends to campaign on Third Party Insurance to draw the attention of policy.
Meanwhile, the campaign will be launched at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva on November 20.
