Two more families are homeless in Fiji in a continuing spate of house fires.

In an incident in Naikabula, Lautoka last night, a family of five was asleep in their home when a fire broke out at midnight, leaving the HART (Housing Assistance and Relief Trust) house partly destroyed.

The corrugated iron and wooden structure was occupied by Kamlesh Kumar.

The family escaped the blaze after Kumar’s wife felt intense heat and alerted the rest of the family. No one was injured.

In the second house fire, a lean-to house was destroyed at Olo-Olo settlement in Sigatoka yesterday morning.

No one was at home at the time of the fire.

The National Fire Authority is working with police to determine the cause of the fire.

A NFA spokesman said the number of house fires between January and September this year stood at 148 while the number for the same period last year stood at 215.
