More than 25 scholarships are awarded to students from Fiji to study in India under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships each year, says Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Professor Prabhakara Jha.
And this is the highest number to be awarded to a country under the scholarship scheme, which caters for students from over 70 countries.
In his address during the International Students Day celebration at the Indian Cultural Centre hall in Suva last night, Jha said India will continue to assist Fijian nationals in attaining the highest level of education through its scholarships.
“There are more than 100 students studying in different fields in India right now and we are expecting them to come back with full credentials to help in the development of their nation,” he said.
“In the past, we have trained doctors, IT professionals and people in so many other fields from Fiji and will continue to assist the nation in all ways possible.”
“The various educational exchange programs constitute an important instrument for the Indian Government to reach out to young people and students for optimum generation of goodwill.”
Meanwhile, the four Fiji nationals that recently visited India under the Know India Programme 2009 also spoke about their Indian experience at the reception.
The four are Harish Kumar, a health inspector; Dipal Maneklal, a Japanese language teacher; Ahalya Gounder, a BSC graduate from USP and Sylvester Joseph, a lawyer.
