Fiji’s Prime Minister has promised incentives for the country’s exporters and to introduce further “enablers” in the national budget for 2010 he will deliver in two weeks.
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama admits that these objectives have been stated previously by past governments, although there has not been much “real” progress.
He said this was due to existing “barriers”, which his Government will be active in removing.
“This means that policy statements simply don’t become a wish list,” he said while addressing a gathering of the country’s exporters at the weekend.
“Rather policy statements must be backed by ensuring that infrastructure is in place, that the laws are changed and modernized; that impediments to a liberalized economy are removed; that our exporters are given appropriate and targeted incentives; productivity initiatives are put in place and stifling bureaucracy is removed.
“My Government has implemented some of these, what I call “enablers”. These include the land reform agenda and the Mindpearl incentives, to name a couple.
“The enabling shall continue through the 2010 Budget which I shall deliver on November 27.”
