Local authorities are still unable to ascertain the amount of money lost on a dishonest senior Government employee who resigned almost four years ago.
This has been revealed in the latest report of Government watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee.
According to the committee’s report on the General Administration Sector - 2006, the Principal Administrative Officer of the Ministry of Fijian Affairs had continued to circumvent his record of attendance before he resigned.
As a result, the committee stated, the civil servant not only exceeded his leave entitlement, but also failed to sign the attendance register to indicate his time of arrival to, and departure from work.
“By the time the anomaly was discovered, the officer had resigned,” it said.
“Consequently, the Ministry withheld his COLA (cost of living adjustment) payment entitlement of $862, but up until September 2009, the authorities were unable to ascertain what the actual amount of recovery ought to have been.”
The report, along with 18 others, has been tabled in Cabinet by the new committee since its establishment following the 2006 military takeover.
It is still unclear what actions, if any, have been taken on discrepancies highlighted in the reports.
