Police in Fiji say no arrests are likely soon in two recent murders that have baffled the capital, Suva.

Spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said investigators were following leads in the murder of a 35-year-old woman found dead in her Howell Road house on Tuesday.

Her husband, the first to discover the body, has been questioned by police.

A post-mortem examination showed the woman died of strangulation.

Sokomuri said police were still investigating the apparent murder of a 57-year-old widow, whose body was found badly burnt in a cassava patch close to her Toorak home two Fridays ago.

Dawashwari Devi’s body was discovered by a security guard at 2am after he saw flames in the cassava patch.

Devi died of strangulation, according to a post-mortem examination report.

Four people including a husband and wife were questioned by police and released the same weekend for lack of evidence.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a report from the National Fire Authority before beginning investigations into a fire at the Votualevu Public School in Nadi yesterday.

Three classrooms and an office were destroyed in the fire, which also razed annual exam papers for the school's 200 students.
