A year and a day since President Barack Obama was elected he hinted Thursday he planned on being around a while, spending eight years to push his ambitious reform agenda.
"So for the next eight years -- next four years at least -- let me not jump the gun," the president said to laughter as he pledged to US tribal leaders that he was committed to giving Native Americans an equal chance.
"For the next three years and one month... that I'm assured of this current position, we are going to make sure that we put the infrastructure and the framework in place so that a new dynamic, a new set of relationships have been established."
Obama was elected the nation's first black president on November 4, 2008, and inaugurated in January.
The next presidential elections will be held in November 2012, when Obama could run again for his Democratic Party. He has already hinted that he would consider running for a second four-year term, without making a categoric commitment.
