Oscar-winner Helen Mirren has signed on to star in espionage thriller "Red," a big-screen adaptation of the DC comic book series, it was reported Wednesday.

Mirren, who scooped the best actress statuette at the Academy Awards in 2007 for her performance in "The Queen," joins a cast featuring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman, Daily Variety reported.

The three-book comic series published in 2003 and 2004 follows the fortunes of a retired CIA agent who is targeted by a high-tech hitman determined to kill him. A November 2010 release date has been set for the project.

Mirren, 64, was most recently seen in Washington political thriller "State of Play."
